Mindful Marking Marketplace

One of our overriding themes for Learning and Teaching this year has been to do more of what is impactful and less of what is not, with particular regard to teacher workload and student wellbeing. After reforming our whole-school homework policy last year, we are redeveloping the marking policy with the view that marking should be MEANINGFUL, MANAGEABLE AND MOTIVATIONAL. PLT Pop Up Store!

We are just over three weeks into the Autumn term and it is such an inspiring time to be on the campus. Autumn colours are starting to emerge in the landscape and signs of the season are evident everywhere we walk. Our learners are still excited and in their new organisational routines which is lovely to see. It is great to see all of them trying their best as they navigate around a new campus or perhaps are trying to make a fresh start for the new term. We are excited to launch our PLT Pop Up Store in the staffroom tomorrow. The aim of the Pop up Store is to reflect on our findings so far and share ideas for the remainder of term.

5 effective assessment approaches using EdTech

 

As we start back to school, here are five approaches that can provide timely and effective feedback whilst potentially reducing marking workload (and using far less paper!)

1. Low Stakes Quizzing

Testing works. Research has demonstrated that taking a test on studied material promotes remembering that material on a final test, a phenomenon called the “testing effect.”

TeachMeet Hatfield.

Way back in the first part of the year, TeachMeet Hatfield invited people to join them in July. What a great idea I thought, I’ll have loads of free time in July – that is a great time for a TeachMeet – count me in! Come July, weirdly, all that free time had mystically disappeared… and I was starting to curse signing up for additional CPD. I needn’t have worried. TeachMeet Hatfield was fantastic: short, sharp presentations with lots of food for thought (and excellent buffet too). If you haven’t been to a TeachMeet before – this was my second – I thoroughly endorse them as a quick way to network and get some new ideas. It is a bit like real-life twitter.

Education Reading Group - The Science of Learning

At lunchtime today we held the final meeting of this year’s Education Reading Group, and discussed The Science of Learning written by the Deans for Impact, which neatly summarises existing research from cognitive science related to how students learn. It identifies six key questions about learning which are relevant to all teachers:
