One month as an NQT

The summer before the start of my NQT year was one of great confusion. Comments ranged from ‘this year will be much better than your PGCE’ to ‘this will be the worst year of your career’. Anecdotal stories were reported back with RQTs wishing that they had spent the previous summer ‘getting their head down to work’ to wishing that they had ‘kicked back and enjoyed the holiday’. Advice from established teachers swung from ‘don’t smile before Christmas’ to ‘set boundaries but be approachable’ to ‘they’ll respect you more if you don’t go in with a lecture about expectations’. Whilst each of these gems of advice has been very gratefully received and taken on board, it is difficult to work out how to align them.
