Developing Differentiation in English

Over the course of this year, a small group of English teachers have been working together to develop strategies for differentiation in English. We met last week to share some of our experiences and to think about how we can continue to develop our work in this area. Our focus has particularly been on supporting students to be able to access the curriculum in English, to develop writing skills, analytical skills and structuring talk for learning. We have used visual organisers to understand, interpret and analyse quotations. A number of us have routinely been using sentence starters and ‘analysis phrases’ with some groups, with the aim that as students become increasingly proficient in using these phrases to structure their written responses to texts, the students will be able to move towards independence in writing.
